Why Am I So Tired?

For a long time, I would ask myself this very question every day around 2:00pm.  I would be sitting at work, feeling as though I could barely hold my eyes open a minute longer.  The worst part was that this happened to me whether I slept 4, 8 or 12 hours the night before.

My solution was typical of most people.

I would get up and head to the coffee pot brewing myself the strongest cup of Joe I could find in the hopes that it would give me a blast of energy to help me make it through the rest of the day.

The problem was that this feeling tired all the time, interfered with much more than just my work.  I was moody and irritable and rarely had the energy to exercise or even think about spending time with friends or family.  When I did sit down to relax, I felt nervous and anxious and I started suffering from bouts of insomnia that only made my situation feel worse.

I contemplated having sleep studies done, visited my physician and had multiple blood tests performed and even tried to make changes in my life that would help me answer my daily question.  “Why am I so tired?”

Spending your days feeling tired is definitely one of the worst ways to live.  Not only did I have trouble focusing, have short-term memory problems but also I was unable to enjoy many things.  And this constant tiredness was making me depressed and worried all at the same time.

When I hit rock bottom and believed there was no hope and that perhaps there was something really wrong with me, I knew I had to do something about it and find out what exactly my problem was, the information I learnt would serve to literally, save my life!

I found out exactly how sleep works to heal and rejuvenate the human body.  Yet more importantly, I learnt how to understand my own sleep patterns and cycles.  Which helped me finally realize why I was waking up tired regardless of how long I slept, and how simple adjustments to my everyday routine would prove incredibly beneficial to my life.

The trick in understanding why you are so tired is having a full understanding of all the things that you may be doing on a daily basis that really work against your energy levels.  For instance, my coffee cravings were disrupting my sleep cycles.

Additionally, I learned that my erratic sleep patterns from day to day, were one of the worst things I could do, and only added to my extreme feelings of tiredness and fatigue.  Even my exercise routine was working against my innate sleep cycle.

The truth is there is much more to sleep than what meets the eye.  So many of us believe that we can sleep extra hours one day in order to feel rested.  I know I believed that.

I also didn’t realize the serious impact that our daily habits can have on our nightly sleep.  One of the most important things I learned is how to figure out my personal sleep cycle and pattern and how I could work with it, in order to gain increased energy supply every single day.

It took me about a month in total to figure things out and begin implementing a routine that allowed me to finally feel rested.

Each and every week as I progressed, I noticed that I had improved mood, focus, was less irritable, was able to handle stress better, and became more productive.  I also was able to stop leaning on coffee and instead learn some little known tricks I could do to actually give me an energy boost throughout the day.

Wondering and worrying why you are so tired is not a good way to feel or live.  While sometimes it is normal for people to be tired or exhausted, this feeling should not last longer than a few days.

If it does, you can assume that you, just like I was, are suffering from chronic fatigue and extreme tiredness.  There is hope and there is definitely, a better way to live.

But before you dive in and try everything you can think of to help stop feeling tired.  I encourage you not to.
